10th Sept-8th March/Designers in Residence 2014: Disruption/Design Museum/London

Last day to attend Design in Residence 2014:Disruption at Design Museum.

Designers in Residence is about more than good design, or even innovation in design. It is about creating time and space in the form of a seven-month residency — and giving four UK-based designers a period of reflection, research and critical rigour away from their normal routine.
Now in its seventh year, Designers in Residence invites young designers to respond to a brief set by Deyan Sudjic, the Director of the Design Museum. For 2014, this theme is disruption. “More than most, ‘disruptive’ is a term whose meaning is dependent on the context,” says Deyan. “It’s conventionally considered almost a bad thing — difficult pupils, bad neighbours, ill-considered town planning — it is now the most sought after quality in a new product.”
The four new works that form the Designers in Residence exhibition all have disruption at their core, yet each designer has taken a markedly different approach.

13 Sept-10 Oct/Endless Stair London Design Festival/Tate Modern/London

Installed outside Tate Modern, the towering structure will invite visitors to climb and explore a series of 15 Escher-like interlocking staircases made from a prefabricated construction using 44 cubic metres of American tulipwood donated by AHEC members. As a viewpoint, Endless Stair provides breath-taking views along the River Thames.

The complex construction is designed by Alex de Rijke, Co-Founder of dRMM Architects and Dean of Architecture at the Royal College of Art, working closely with engineers at Arup. De Rijke has described timber as ‘the new concrete’, predicting that it will be the dominant construction material of the 21st Century.

Endless Stair sees the London Design Festival reviving its longstanding relationship with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) in a playful, yet technically ambitious public project to be installed with the powerful backdrop of one of the city’s best-loved landmarks, Tate Modern.

11 May/What Design Can Do!/Stadsschouwburg/Amsterdam

What Design Can Do is a two-day international conference on the impact of design. WDCD presents design not only as mere aesthetics, but as a way of thinking about problem solving for social issues. The second edition of What Design Can Do explores the role of the designer as a connector and the opportunities today’s networked society offer him for social progress. Amongst the more than 20 speakers are Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf, American graphic designer Paul Scher, Brazilian activist interior designer Marcelo Rosenbaum, the German architects of Raumlabor, African fashion designer Alphadi, and Dutch product designer Hella Jongerius.

Together wit Archis/Volume, the NAi is organising a break-out session at the international conference 'What Design Can Do!' in the Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam. Nowadays almost everybody is connected with each other through internet and social media. This raises the question if people are still engaged in real 'contact'. Virtual time is replacing public time. This break-out session is an attempt to literally break with this phenomenon and to find an answer to the question 'What design can do for Contact'. Join us! Featuring, among others, Axel Timm (Raumlabor), Francisco van Jole (Joop.nl), Younghee Jung, Lilet Breddels (Archis/Volume), Ole Bouman (NAi) and you.
